June 2006 - 5000 Balloon release - Trafalgar Square, London:

Need something spectacular to attract the press - why not create a real impact with a mass balloon release?

Before inflating the balloons we prepare the 'balloon tube' and equipment, the balloons will only float for 15 hours so they need to be inflated near the release time.

When the balloon tube is made secure, we sit inside and begin inflating the balloons.

Every balloon is hand tied giving - 100% biodegradable!

We are ready to launch one hour before our clients required deadline. We get into position and confirm our cue for the balloon release.

The balloon release is a huge PR success, appearing on Sky News and in the national press - that's why we're the corporate balloons specialist.

Balloon Race

The new idea to take over the balloon release which has recieved bad press in recent years regarding the environment (even though the latex balloons are 100% biodegradable) is balloon race the virtual reality concept - Get ready, it's coming and will be launched in 2009 together with the Penguin mascot. It will change the way schools and charities raise funds forever!

January 2005 - NABAS stand @ the Florist Show:

NABAS - the balloon association, needed their stand decoration at the Florist Show, Birmingham ICC.

We built this balloon sculpture above the stand. The stand was only small with limited space, so we made an impact by using the space above the stand.

The decoration was finished by using simple foil balloons in the shape of insects, Ladybirds and butterflies.

As always the presses have been working overtime keeping up with demand for our Printed balloons. During April we produced balloons for:-

  • ITV

  • Midlands Co-op

  • West Way Nissan

  • Centro

  • Redrow Homes

  • Family Housing Association

  • Lookers

  • BMW Synter

  • Bristol Street Motors

  • Silks & Spice

Balloons

In addition we have printed balloons for schools and organisations who are preparing for their Summer Balloon Race. Every year we provide materials to schools which organise their own Balloon Race as their major Fund Raising event of the year. It seems that this year will be as busy as ever so keep your eyes open for our printed balloons flying over your head having been released as part of a Balloon Race in your area. We are pleased to have supplied materials to The Boys Brigade who are organising a Balloon Race for the first time.

It's certainly been a busy month for our decorators who have spent much time in the ICC. We have decorated events there for The St Patrick's Day Ball, The Best Connection Ball, The Gay Pride function and the Lloyds TSB Dinner / Dance. Other decorations include those for The St George's Day Ball at The Botanical Gardens and a function for The Birmingham Post & Mail at the Burlington Hotel.

We are preparing to assist Molnycke Health Care with their presentations at hotels in Chester and Warwick – numerous 36” Emerald Green balloons will be the centre piece here.

We have organised 2 major Balloon Releases during the last few weeks. A release at the Reebok Stadium – home of Bolton Wanderers Football Club – was the finale of a major presentation for a North of England business group and a release in Dartmouth Park for Sandwell Council and Sainsbury's rounded off a frantic weekend on St George's Day. Saturday saw our staff preparing The Botanical Gardens for the annual St George's Day Ball. A frantic drive to London followed as we helped build and erect the Spiralling Arches which mark each mile in the Flora London Marathon. Having worked overnight we are back in Birmingham to deliver gas for a major event sponsored by Unison and finally the Sainsbury's release on Sunday afternoon. No wonder everyone was exhausted come Monday morning!

Next month's update will no doubt have details of the numerous successful Balloon Race events we have helped to organise throughout the country.

How to make a balloon bomb / exploding balloon:

How do we get 100 small balloons inside a 3ft balloon?

We use a simple hose & gun regulator attached to an air or nitrogen cylinder. We've used this method for years - in the old days........ when balloon bombs first appeared there were no gadgets or stuffers to make them, this was the only way - it's really easy, puts no stress on the neck of the 36" balloon and you can fill the balloon with nearly 100 x 5".

First inflate the 36" with an air inflator (to about 1/2 full) - don't over fill it or when you start inflating the 5" it may burst! Then (using a hose & gun regulator - it is also possible with a hand pump buts takes a while) poke the 5" balloon into the 36" and then inflate it and tie the neck through the neck of the 36" (when we say poke the 5" balloon in - we actually stretch the 5" balloon over the nozzle on the gun, hold it with one finger, then quickly poke it in and inflate it - this sounds complicated but weve trained loads of staff to do this, after about 5 minutes practice they've usually got the knack!)

We sit on a chair with the 36" balloon wedged between our legs and a wall - this stops the balloon moving around, we don't want it to hit anything sharp.

Then the magic bit............ The 5" balloon you've just inflated acts as a stopper, it sits stuck in the neck of the 36" and acts as a plug! The air in the big balloon keeps it pushed in the neck. You can go make a cup of tea if you want - the air will not come out the big balloon! Now you just repeat the process, pop the next balloon in removing 'your plug' and inflate it - this balloon then becomes the plug! As you go on filling the balloon you may have to let some air out so you don't risk it bursting.

Once full we let the air out the big balloon, stuff confetti in, then bag it ready for the event. We usually prep these one day before!

Latex Filling Kit Operating Instructions

Operating Instruction for your latex filling kit - please note you do not require a spanner.

Make sure the cylinders are safe and secure. Chain, tie or strap them to something solid.

Screw the filling kit into the cylinder 'finger tight' - DO NOT USE A SPANNER.

Slowly open the cylinder tap anti-clockwise. You might hear a firm 'popping' sound.

Inflating a latex balloon using the latex filling kit

Place the neck of the latex balloon over the rubber tip, tilt the tip at any angle to begin inflating the balloon.

When the balloon is 'pear shaped' - stop inflating and tie a knot in the balloon.

Inflating a foil balloon

Hold the neck of the foil balloon over the nozzle and push back, release when balloon is fully inflated.

Do not over fill the foil balloon, leave some creases in the balloon to allow for temperature change.

After you have finished inflating your helium balloons, turn the cylinder off, release the helium trapped in the filling kit and remove the kit before transporting the helium cylinder.

If you have any problems inflating your balloons contact balloon.co.uk on 08459 002 007 or email us - b@lloon.com

Company History: How did balloon.co.uk look in the beginning?

Who would have thought that 25 years ago when David Saker, started work as a Saturday boy at probably the UK's first balloon shop, Kite and Balloon, in London, it would lead to where he is today.

ww.balloondrop.net is a specialist balloon supplier and designer for all occasions, Balloons for all parties wedding decorations, Birthday party decorations, retirement parties, balloon releases on special occasions of all shapes, colour and sizes with bespoke and templated design available.

Today David is the proud owner of two retail balloon shops within the central Birmingham area. Working full time in the balloon print room and driving the delivery van gave David the inspiration to start his own business. Ten years ago, with money borrowed from friends and family, accompanied by a move to the Midlands, Balloon Attack was born in the spare bedroom of his house. Initially until the decorating jobs began to roll in, David tried selling helium foil balloons in hospital receptions, on markets and at village fetes.

The business began to take off with mainly small weddings and parties when the yellow pages advert he had placed was issued. We have to remember that 10 years ago there were very few freelance jobs around, unlike now, because the industry has grown phenomenally there is always someone somewhere requiring an extra pair of hands. All the experience gained and the money that was earned was done single-handed.

David worked alone for around a year then took on part-time staff who were prepared to work as and when they were required. The business grew and grew until it became time to move onwards and upwards. A shop became vacant in Bearwood, local to where David lived, the rent and rates were reasonable and with the regular customer base that had been gained over the years basic mathematics said that the business would still break even without increasing the turnover at all. This of course was not the case and Balloon Attack increased in turnover and most importantly reputation.

Whilst Balloon Attack was expanding David started another business, called The Black Balloon Company. This company concentrates on balloon releases and races and during August 1996 organised over 700! To start with David put in £1,000 to the new business and used this money to mail shot 4,000 locations who may be interested in having a balloon release. With the money made in the first year 10,000 locations were targeted. Following its success a bank loan was taken out and 50,000 locations were targeted. In a nutshell The Black Balloon Company will organise all the requirements you need for a Do It Yourself balloon release. The required quantity of balloons along with the correct size release net, race labels if required, are shipped to the venue, the gas is ordered and delivered direct from the gas company and hey presto you have a balloon release. All the customer has to provide is the labour (this can also be provided but at a price as the release could be anywhere in the country).

Birmingham Balloons

In January 1997 the opportunity to purchase an existing all be it run down balloon shop in Birmingham city centre arose. The shop had been trading since 1982 so had a good customer base but had been left to falter due to ill health by its owner at the time. David saw the potential and a deal was struck. Along with the four storey building came a balloon printing machine and Janet its trusty operator! This opened up another door that has become a business in its own right. Dramatic changes had to be made to the shop to begin its rise to success. Still keeping the original trading name of Balloons n' Things to maintain the continuity with the general public but with immediate effect all the prices were increased. A complete refurbishment of the actual shop floor area including the introduction of a counter: better displays of foil and latex balloons and window displays that were eye catching to the public and would entice them through the door: To complete the new image a major advertising campaign was undertaken, predominantly Yellow Pages. As many as 20 different area books were advertised in, in order to spread the word.

Sales in the new shop began to increase almost overnight initially due to the price increases in store but as the adverts were seen the decorating jobs increased and so to did the orders for printed balloons. Along with the increase in sales came an increase in staff. From working single handed David now has nine staff between the two shops, four full-time including himself and the rest part-lime mainly at weekends or whenever the workload dictates.

David places great importance on the staff and ensuring they are happy, at the end of the day the staff are your business, they are at the forefront dealing with the customer on a daily basis. Many is the time that the customer never sees the owner only the workers. They are trusted implicitly and are rewarded accordingly.

Then came the internet.....

The company aquired both 'balloon.com' & 'balloon.co.uk' and retail shops became outdated compared to the 24/7 service of the internet. Today The Black Balloon Ltd provides printed balloons and helium for 'planet earth' - and each year the websites go higher up the rankings and sales increase.

Balloon Race

Following bad press regarding balloons races we took one step further with our internet campagne and built a Virtual Balloon Race. Balloons can be boosted by playing Game of the Day or requesting boost donations.

The Virtual Balloons fly over real live websites and also works as a random search engine.
